Yeshayahu Leibowitz: Audacious Israeli Philosophy

Prof. Zeev Harvey

Prof. Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1903-1994) of Jerusalem was an original, learned, and bold philosopher. He developed a fascinating approach to Judaism, based on the philosophies of Maimonides and Immanuel Kant. He fearlessly discussed the most difficult questions of religion, Zionism, and the State of Israel. He was a source of inspiration to many and also irritated many – but to this day he remains an Israeli thinker who should not be ignored. Zeev Harvey is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Jewish Thought at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on medieval and modern Jewish philosophy. He is an EMET Prize laureate in the Humanities (2009).
